[To his credit, he's only really bad at it when he's lying to someone whose opinion he actually cares about-- although that doesn't really make this better.]

Is this about the whole him actually working with us thing? [A beat.] ...I listened at the door.

[He should probably be more ashamed about the whole blatantly eavesdropping thing, but honestly, did Angel expect anything else?]

[Nope, sure didn't. Not like he couldn't smell Dipper hanging around outside the door, either.]

Well, that saves a lot of explaining. I don't know if I'd call it working with us. [It's not putting him on quite the same level as Dipper, after all.] I want him somewhere I can keep a close eye on him-- and I need you to tell me everything you know.

[Dipper isn't sure he buys that... it sounds too much like the sort of thing Angel would say to try to make Dipper feel better about the situation. But the keeping him somewhere close to keep an eye on him part does make sense at least.]

I don't know, I think I learned more from his conversation with you than I knew before, but he writes weird codes in his sleep and tried to kill Chara.

I've known for awhile that there's something off about him, but my senses haven't been able to pick up on it. We're not friendly enough for me to have been able to witness anything firsthand, but I've seen the videos he's put out. Talked to him a few times. What happened with Chara?

Well. the thing about Chara is... [How best to put this in a way that won't get Chara in trouble?] They can be... kind of creepy. And I guess they scared Max? Which isn't okay, but like, isn't illegal. Then she got scared and told Alex and Alex decided the best way to solve it was to kill them. In a place where people come back to life.

[He doesn't know whether the attempted murder annoys him more or the faulty logic.]

...anyway, it didn't work. Chara killed him instead. But it was self defense.

He jumped right to the extreme.

[An extreme no normal person would ever leap to so suddenly, if they ever got there at all.]

Can you tell me more about Chara?

There's... a lot to tell. They've had a pretty terrible life, it sounds like, and now they're... sort of dead maybe?

[Dipper shrugs. Chara's complicated, and he's still trying to figure out the details.]

But they're definitely just a messed-up kid, not a demon or anything. No matter what they or anyone else says.

Not that it changes anything. But maybe understanding a little more about the both of them will help me help them.

Yeah, I know. [Dipper gives a half smile, glancing away. Not many adults actually seem to care what he has to say. It's nice... finding someone who actually does and admits it.]

I still think working with Alex is a mistake.

You might be right. And trust me, I'll be keeping that in mind.

[But he shifts his weight as he glances back towards the door, arms still folded tightly.]

I just gotta follow my gut on this one. I feel like people might be safer if he's where I can keep an eye on him.
