Dipper, right? This is Nora Endicott. A little bird told me you like mysteries. Well, a cat, actually. Mind helping me out with something?

YEAH I'm great at mysteries! Mae? She's not actually a cat, you know. People just look like animals where she's from. She told me all about it.

See, talking cat I could kind of get behind as the kind of crazy this place has already, but that's just confused me even more. I'll have to ask her about it.

Okay. Here's the puzzle. I got this from our friend R.Q.

[ Attached is a picture of a jar filled with a softly glowing white light. ]

It looks like a memory. Like those jars in that room last winter.

Where are you? Can I come see it in person? Have you opened it? Can you open it?

The general consensus is that it's a memory.

My room's 111, or I can come to the diner or the library or somewhere if that's easier for you.

[And like five minutes later, he skids to a stop in front of her door and knocks. Dipper is nothing if efficient when there's a mystery afoot.]

[ She opens the door, offering a friendly smile down at him. The room is decorated like a typical fifties suburban home, with the exception of the large collection of guns on a table near the wall. The record player crackles over swing band music. ]

That was quick. Come on in.

I ran. [There were MYSTERIES afoot.] Can I see it?

[geiger]

Sure. [ She takes the jar from the shelf she'd placed it on, holding out for Dipper to take. ]

[krmvgivv]

[Dipper takes it, examining it closely.] Yeah, it looks just like the ones in that room last winter. Have you opened it?

[geiger]

Shepard told me about that. [ She felt very glad she hadn't been here for that particular event. ] No, I wasn't sure if opening it was a good idea in case it exploded or something.

[krmvgivv]

I don't know if exploding would be my first guess. But it definitely could fly away or dissipate or something.

[He turns it over, looking at it from all angles.]

I wonder who it belongs to.

[geiger]

Is there any way to tell? Short of opening it up, anyway.

[ Even if they opened it up and the memory returned to the person it had been taken from, she didn't know if there was any way for them to be certain that they'd got it back. It could take weeks to find the specific word attached to it, if they had even been aware that word had gone in the first place. ]

[krmvgivv]

I don't think so. I mean, maybe one of the science people knows? Or...

[He hesitates, frowning.]

Well, we could ask.

[geiger]

[ Nora frowns back at him, a little confused. ]

Ask how, exactly? On the network, if anyone suddenly got a random memory back?

[krmvgivv]

No, I mean ask some of the long-term residents. You know, like Alice or the Dormouse or someone.

[geiger]

...That never even occurred to me. I always assumed they'd only speak to us if they wanted something, or to be the voice of doom for the events.

[krmvgivv]

You can always talk to them when they're being the voice of doom. Some of them are pretty nice.

[geiger]

I'll have to poke one of them the next time I get an opportunity.

[Evelyn leaves an old, worn copy of E.A. Wallis Budge’s The Book of the Dead, no doubt of her personal collection, for Dipper. The margins are riddled with her own notes in a neat, tidy hand. An inscription on the inside reads:]

Dipper:
These texts were used to facilitate the passage for the dead to the afterlife.
